CARR - Concern for Abortion and Reproductive Rights
// A multi-platform hub regarding women's reproductive health that offers unbiased information on statistics, medical procedures, and women's health services.
Time to Read: ~1.5 minutes
This year, 5,588 women around the world have died due to complications from unsafe abortions.
Deaths caused by safe abortions?
Zero.
What?
CARR looks to offer a nonpartisan and gender neutral environment that provides…
Statistics on various medical procedures.
Nearby locations where those procedures can be performed.
Information on the legality of those procedures.
The Problem
The current state of reproductive rights within common discourse is bogged down by political beliefs and social stigma.
Largely due to the heated discourse, existing services like Planned Parenthood or the ACLU are associated with a negative mental image for some people. Because of this, those same people are limited in their access to information and actions relating to women’s reproductive health.
Our product will offer a nonpartisan alternative platform offering up-to-date statistics, scientific consensus, and information on women’s healthcare services.
We want to focus on creating a safe and welcoming environment for first-time-users.
Who’s Who?
Task 1 // Find an Abortion Provider
Task 2 // Learn about the Medical Procedures
Task 3 // Donate to a Provider
System Aesthetics
Our primary goal was to make CARR as welcoming as possible since it’s likely that people using our product are in a volatile mental state.
Hence our unconventional color palette, which was inspired by coral reefs and meant to calm users.
Our geometry had the same purpose. The lack of sharp visual forms was inspired by lava lamps and used to produce a more “home-y” feel.
Process
A problem we predicted was that our emphasis on comforting users would hurt our product’s sense of credibility. So we put an immediate call-to-action on the front page. This not only inspires the curious mind to look further, but reinforces our credibility.
Due to the sensitive subject matter, we also took great care with wording. Notice the change from “abortion” to “abortions”. We found this phrasing better reflected the totality of abortions rather than commenting on singular instances.
Variation in medium
To accommodate for the different styles of use present in different mediums, we shifted the placement of the navigation to match natural hand motions and appear reminiscent of popular apps on those platforms. The functionality however, remains largely unchanged.
